GKN Wins USD$600 Mln Engine Deals, A350 Contract

British plane parts maker GKN has won contracts to make components for Rolls-Royce and General Electric aircraft engines and parts for Airbus's new A350 XWB plane.
Under a deal worth USD$300 million to GKN, the company will make tail bearings for Rolls' Trent 700 and 1000 model engines at its El Cajon facility in California until 2020.
GKN also said it had signed a five-year deal worth USD$300 million with GE Aviation to supply aluminium and titanium components for a range of commercial and military aircraft engines.

The company added that it won two contracts to make composite parts for the landing flaps of the wings for Airbus's new wide-body A350 XWB plane.
GKN, which declined to give a value for the Airbus deal, said it would deliver the first components for the XWB's developmental flaps in early 2011.

Embraer Sells 7 Jets To Brazilian Carriers

Embraer said on Monday it sold seven commercial planes to Brazilian airlines Azul and Trip for about USD$291 million, underscoring a gradual recovery in demand for new jets.
Embraer sold five of its ERJ-195 models to Azul, a low-cost airline, for USD$211 million, it said in a statement.
It sold two of its ERJ-190 jets to Trip for USD$80 million, the statement added. The sales had been booked in the company's firm order backlog for the second quarter of 2010, the statement said.

The company, which suffered deeply from the impact of the global recession after late 2008, delivered 69 commercial and executive jets in the second quarter, up from 54 a year earlier.
Embraer's pipeline of firm orders fell 5 percent to USD$15.2 billion as of June 30, a slower decline compared to the first quarter. A year earlier, firm orders were USD$19.8 billion.

Delta Posts Profit But Shares Fall

Delta Air Lines posted a better-than-expected second-quarter profit on Monday, but revenue missed expectations and its shares fell.
The company's third-quarter outlook raised concerns about the strength of the recovery for airlines, which are widely expected to post better results as travel demand improves from recession weakness. Other carriers' shares were also off.

Delta said the overall revenue environment was good, but it cited room for improvement.
"The revenue environment is improving; I would characterise it as good, not yet great," Delta chief executive Richard Anderson said.
Net income at Delta was USD$467 million for the second quarter, compared with a net loss of USD$257 million a year earlier.
Passenger revenue per available seat mile rose 19 percent as Delta made more money per seat mile flown and operated fuller planes.
Delta, which has cited improving corporate and international traffic, said it expected double-digit gains in unit revenue for the current quarter.
"I would have liked to have seen more volume growth," said Morningstar analyst Basili Alukos. He said traffic in terms of revenue passenger miles flown was up 1.7 percent in the quarter, suggesting there was still room for improvement in terms of traffic.
"It just shows you kind of a tepid recovery from the volume side," Alukos said.
Still, rising fuel costs pose a threat. Expenses tied to aircraft fuel rose 8 percent in the quarter. Delta said operating expenses, which rose 5 percent, were partly offset by savings from its 2008 acquisition of Northwest Airlines.

USD$12 Bln Leasing Spree Lifts Farnborough

Aircraft leasing firms made a major comeback on Monday, as industry veteran Steve Udvar-Hazy dropped USD$4 billion on Airbus A320s and former rivals at General Electric doubled his efforts.
General sentiment at the Farnborough Airshow, the industry's largest gathering, was that the lessors' flurry of activity proved the industry was starting a meaningful recovery from recession.
"2011-2012 is the time when the rising tide will lift all ships," Bombardier Commercial Aircraft President Gary Scott told reporters.
Udvar-Hazy, the mastermind of the aircraft leasing industry who recently started afresh after leaving AIG, ordered 51 narrow-body Airbus planes and said he would buy more planes soon.

"We have a lot of old and loyal airline customers," he said. "Lessors are capturing a larger and larger segment of the total population of airliners."
The leasing arm of GE weighed in with an order for 100 similar planes -- 60 from Airbus and 40 from Boeing -- worth a total USD$8 billion, and delegates said Udvar-Hazy could lift the combined tally to 200 planes.
Leasing firms are the first to flee the market when traffic and business decline and first to come back when activity improves.
"Right now you are looking at a very strong return for those leasing companies. There is a strong demand for these products and they seem to be taking advantage," said Richard Aboulafia, Vice President at Virginia-based consultancy Teal Group.
MIDDLE EASTERN FOCUS
There was also plenty of focus on Middle Eastern buyers at the show, given their propensity for large orders.
Dubai's Emirates placed a USD$9 billion order for 30 Boeing 777 large passenger jets, just six weeks after making an USD$11 billion order for superjumbo Airbus A380s.
On the other hand, Qatar's national carrier Qatar Airways, expected to make a splash at the show, only bought a couple of Bombardier executive jets.
Qatar Airways chief executive Akbar Al Baker told reporters he was prepared to order Bombardier's new single-aisle C-series passenger jets but "some issues" had come up during talks.
Bombardier later told said the issues were between Qatar Airways and Pratt & Whitney, which makes engines for the C-series.
The wheeling and dealing was typical for Farnborough, otherwise a sleepy southern English town that hosts the massive aviation and arms jamboree every other year, rotating with Le Bourget near Paris.

US and overseas airlines should be required to disclose all fees to ensure passengers, are fully informed about how much their tickets costs, congressional investigators said on Wednesday.
The Government Accountability Office (GAO), the investigative arm of Congress, said in a report that airlines made USD$1.3 billion in baggage and other fees in the first quarter of 2010, up 13 percent from the year-ago period.
Revenue from ancillary fees has grown from less than 1 percent of operating revenues in 2007 to more than 4 percent last year, or USD$7.8 billion, industry figures showed.
Airlines largely compete on base fares, which are often compared by consumers before making a ticket purchase. Airlines must include some fees, including fuel surcharges, in their advertised fare.
Checked-bag fees must be disclosed separately at the time of ticket purchase, a point that can cause confusion on pricing, the GAO said. Moreover, there is no disclosure requirement for other optional fees, such as charges for pillows and blankets, seat selection, early boarding and food.
"As a result, customers using online travel agencies and traditional or corporate travel agents, which together sell 60 percent of all airline tickets, cannot readily obtain and compare information on complete trip prices," the GAO said.
Pending legislation would require more disclosure, but prospects for passage are unclear.
Representative Jerry Costello, chairman of the aviation subcommittee in the House of Representatives, said at a hearing on Wednesday that greater transparency should be the goal of industry.
"So people understand and know what they're getting, and they can compare one price to another and (know) what their options are," Costello said.

Boeing 787 Delivery Schedule May Slip

Boeing said on Thursday that issues raised in its 787 Dreamliner flight tests could delay first delivery of the long-awaited carbon-composite aircraft into the first part of 2011, but the company also expects an uptick in new plane demand over the next two decades.
Scott Fancher, general manager of the 787 programme, said the plane maker has not yet made a decision to move the first delivery to Japan's All Nippon Airways. First delivery is currently scheduled for the end of 2010.
"We've seen some issues recently that have pushed our schedule margin a bit," Fancher said.
The issues relate to "instrument configuration" and inspection work, Fancher said. He said the possible delay is not related to plane operations.
News of the potential delay comes ahead of the world's biggest air show next week at Farnborough near London. Boeing plans to display a Dreamliner at the air show.
The 787 is already more than two years behind its original schedule. Production of the plane was delayed five times in three years, and the first flight was postponed six times, because of parts shortages, design problems and a two-month strike at Boeing's factory in 2008.
Last month, Boeing temporarily stopped flying its test 787s after identifying a problem affecting the horizontal tail.
"We wanted to give a little bit of a cautionary note that things could push into the first part of next year," Fancher said on Thursday. "Our schedule still shows delivery for the end of the year."
Boeing said on Thursday it has chosen North Charleston, South Carolina, as the location to build a new facility to make parts for the Dreamliner interior.
The factory will be 10 miles from Boeing's 787 final assembly and delivery site in North Charleston. Construction is expected to begin in the fourth quarter of 2010.

Airbus Wins EUR€2 Bln Order From Aeroflot

Airbus has won an order worth more than EUR€2 billion (USD$2.5 billion) to deliver A330 planes to Russian airline Aeroflot, a source familiar with the deal said on Thursday.
"Aeroflot has made the order already a few days ago," the source said.
EADS would not comment while Aeroflot was not available for comment.
Aeroflot chief executive Vitaly Savelyev had already said in a TV interview last weekend that the company expected to acquire 22 Boeing 787s and 22 Airbus A350s by 2016 in a move to expand its fleet.(Reuters)

Demand for first and business class tickets rebounded strongly in May, rising nearly a fifth year-on-year, after stagnating in April because of European airspace closures, air industry association IATA said.
In the first five months of the year, premium travel has grown by 10.8 percent compared with the 2009 period as business confidence and world trade recover, IATA said on Thursday.
In May premium travel was 18.7 percent higher than a year earlier, compared with a 10.2 percent rise in economy class travel and growth of only 1.1 percent in premium travel in April, the International Air Transport Association said in its monthly assessment of premium travel.
Consumer confidence is improving but at a slower rate than business confidence and leisure travel is lagging the recovery, IATA said.
Asia and North and Mid Pacific routes showed growth rates of 20 percent or more while routes linked to the Middle East now represent more than 10 percent of international premium travellers.
The North Atlantic market remains fairly sluggish, with premium traffic rising 7.8 percent in May.
Routes within Europe saw growth in premium traffic jumping to 23 percent in May, reflecting an increase in long-haul passengers connecting through major European hubs.
IATA said last month it expected the air industry to return to profit this year.

Boeing Raises Global Outlook For Aircraft Demand

Boeing raised its forecasts for new plane demand on the growth of low-cost carriers, the replacement of less efficient aircraft and economic recovery.
The company said in a report on Thursday it expected 30,900 new planes to be ordered worldwide over the next two decades, up 6.5 percent from last year's forecast of 29,000.
It said the new orders would be worth USD$3.6 trillion, up 12.5 percent from the USD$3.2 trillion forecast a year ago.
"A slightly higher GDP (gross domestic product) forecast, an increase in replacement demand and the growth of low-cost carriers in emerging markets will help stimulate demand," Randy Tinseth, vice president for marketing at Boeing's commercial planes division, told reporters.
Boeing's market outlook to 2029 comes ahead of the world's biggest airshow next week at Farnborough near London.
The company forecasts that Europe will need 7,190 new planes by 2029, valued at USD$800 billion.
It expects world air traffic to grow by 5.3 percent a year to 2029, with passenger numbers rising 4.2 percent per year.
During that time, the Asia Pacific region will overtake North America as the largest market for air traffic in the world.
Rising and volatile fuel prices will continue to shape the aviation industry. Boeing expects the price of crude oil to be between USD$75 - USD$85 a barrel next year and between USD$70 - USD$90 a barrel over the next 20 years.
"Once oil is over USD$90 a barrel, alternative fuel sources become viable which would enter the market and bring the oil price back down to USD$90," Tinseth said.
The company will focus on cementing its Boeing 737 strategy by the end of the year and re-evaluate what it is doing with its Boeing 777, he added.
"Over the long term, we see the aviation industry as resilient and our long-term market outlook is very strong."

In June 2010, Air Berlin, Germany's second-largest airline company, welcomed 3,022,294 passengers on board, i.e. an increase of 3.4 percent (June 2009: 2,922,098 passengers, including those traveling on the acquired TUIfly routes). Fleet capacity utilization decreased to 75.1 percent, i.e. by 3.7 percentage points (June 2009: 78.8 percent). Revenue per available seat kilometer (ASK) decreased by 9.3 percent, i.e. from 6.07 to 5.51 Eurocents.

Air China Looking To Buy Airbus, Boeing Jets

Air China is in talks to buy wide-bodied jets from Airbus and Boeing, including A350 and 787 jets, to revamp its fleet, a source close to the carrier said on Wednesday.
The ongoing negotiations with Airbus and Boeing also cover the exchange of Air China's used jets for new ones, the source said.
Air China could not be immediately reached for comment.
Air China, which has a fleet of 256 jets, operates 245 routes servicing 30 countries and regions.

Qantas Brings Forward Boeing 787 Deliveries

Australia's Qantas Airways will receive the first of 50 Boeing 787 aircraft in mid-2012, around two years earlier than previously expected, the company said in a statement on Wednesday.
Qantas said its firm orders for the Boeing 787 aircraft remain at 50 and it retains the ability to purchase an additional 50 aircraft.
